Copyright Reforms

In this post I’m going to be sharing my opinion on the book called The Case for Copyright Reform.

This book was written by Christian Engström and Rickard Falkvinge and was published in 2012.

The book starts with a very interesting opinion such that today’s copyright laws and legislations are out of balance and out of tune with the times we live in. I can a 100% agree with this statement. Those who make the rules are not up to date with modern technologies and their purpose and yet they are trying to regulate them. Regulating something that is not understood by the individual is possible but will lead to chaos and disagreement.

The book chooses a very good and valid point that is the non-commercial sharing of copyrighted content on the Internet. It is impossible to limit these processes since that would mean taking away the privacy of users, something that is also not possible and would cause a huge scandal. There would always be people who could make something invisible in the eyes of the law if needed and also, privacy is a basic human right.

On the Internet there are endless options and limitless resources that’s why the authors called it the most fantastic public library that has ever been created and I have to agree. The argument that piracy is bad for the authors is valid yet not that bad as some may paint the picture.

As of the next chapter it touches the questions of privacy stating that file sharing is the process of two individuals exchanging 1s and 0s via the internet and even trying to filter it would be the violation of a basic human right and would need monitoring everything private. Yes, this would eliminate piracy but would also make it impossible to communicate sensitive information with a lawyer a lover or basically anyone.

Humanity is not prepared to give up their rights and not willing to do so. This right is more important than the interests of big companies. Staying on top meaning that you got to earn at least the same as before but the companies trying to enforce these unethical laws will not lose a noticeable amount of revenue to piracy.

These were my thought of the beginning of the book, this really is a good read so give it a go if happen to have some free time. The topic is much deeper and well thought out so everyone would enjoy it.

As for me thank you for reading my blog this week too!
