Netiquette

In this week’s blogpost I am going to be writing about netiquette or in other words, the ten commandments of the Internet. These are the basics of courtesy online which were published by Virginia Shea in 1995. We should always bear in mind the netiquette when interacting in the cyber space.

The commandment I will be writing is the 1st one: Remember the human.

Remember the human:

In today’s society we can easily forget that we are chatting with our fellow human beings. Some people are very aggressive and toxic through the web, saying mean and abusive things to others, not considering how they might feel and not knowing why they are like that in the first place.

It is especially true for online competitive gaming. Some gamers want to win so badly that they would trash talk anything if things were not going according to how they planed it. This develops a toxic behavior that can be transferred to real life scenarios as well. Some of these persons do not act like it in a real-life situation but unfortunately most of them do. There is an advantage of this which is you will know the giveaway traits of a toxic person if you meet them.

Another place where this non-respecting phenomenon occurs is online dating. Some people just do not care about other’s feelings and would hurt anybody in any way they can to get what they want. In my opinion this is derived from the fact that most of the cyber space does not show any respect towards other humans and by this everybody is trying to protect their own self.

To make some personal examples, I used to play competitive online games for a very long time. The thing is that most people like me, are not playing the be the best in the world and do not care if they lose some games, we just want to enjoy that game. Now on the other hand, there are those few who do not care about anything but winning. When these two types of personalities meet the game could be very toxic. Most of the time it is the one who wants to win no matter what who starts the bullying. It can be ignored, and I have learnt how to do it, but sometimes when you are tired and exhausted it is just hard to tolerate and makes you even angrier. That is the main reason why I stopped competitive online games because when a game causes more trouble than it brings joy then it’s not worth playing.

Thank you for reading this week’s blogpost, hope you enjoyed it!
